Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

The blue-and-gold macaw is a beautiful bird with a stunning visual appeal. Its friendly personality makes it a great companion for families. It is also very good in its interactions and quickly master new terms and tricks.

Lolita's Personality

Macaws are a wonderful companion bird. They are friendly and intelligent. These birds are best suited to families with a range of members. They are prone to becoming bored and find different ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't interacting with them enough. Macaws that are not properly socialized may become aggressive and may even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly defined so that the severe macaw doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting, and climb. They require 2 to 3 hours per day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, listening to music and learning new tricks. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as much as hiking, local eateries and bars. In addition to being a fun pet they also make wonderful companions for children.

Despite their adorable nature they are loud and can be a nuisance to those who live close by. They can make ear-shattering screeches and loud calls which can be annoying to those who live in condos or apartments.

This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. Because of this the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is established, pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.

Lolita's Care

For years activists have been lobbying for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita might have a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to the ocean.

They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, vowed to work on plans with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could live the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

While her beauty is undeniable, Lolita's health continues to decline. She's been a source of concern for animal welfare groups that wish to see her returned into the wild. Lolita, who has lived at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970 was a popular tourist attraction for a long time. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile state.

The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current condition. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates indicate that Toki is ageing rapidly and her health has deteriorated.

Since her captor doesn't have to disclose this information, it is unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the deaths of orcas in captivity.

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita many believe that she could be closer than ever before to a wild life. The new owner of Seaquarium has pledged to transfer the whale from her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.

The move comes following years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she can swim in the ocean and even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. The plans were not enough to save the whale who died on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney problem.
