WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases the item level by +3. Each upgrade also boosts an unspecified substat.

The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless the item has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or a high stat variance (like the eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are less valuable for those with lower requirements because of the requirement to roll a perfect version.

They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade items is able to be applied to any tool, weapon or armor. The button will show a preview of an item's next level of upgrade, when there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the item slot, and the current item level. For instance weapons cost more than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each step costs 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Certain upgrades provide discounts on Flightstones. Once an item is upgraded to a certain level it can be re-downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

Many locations offer item upgraders which include the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount and a chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrades increases depending on the amount of items being upgraded, and can be boosted by requiring players to complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only accessible through a variety means. This is both a benefit and an issue.

Crests

These crests can then be exchanged at an upgrader NPC, such as Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

The use of these currencies isn't too difficult however, the system will introduce a few modifications to the upgrade process. When a piece has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it no longer requires Flightstones. This allows players to upgrade their gear to the highest level possible for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another significant modification is that crests have one usage, so it's important to make use of them in a responsible manner. For instance, it's a good idea utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the top gear you have available, and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan to create. This is particularly relevant for trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character which will only be able to avail the account-wide discount when all slots are filled with top-quality equipment.
