Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.

In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begins an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

This was the first time all of the original Toto members had been performing together for more than 31 years. The original Toto members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
