There is currently a nationwide shortage of medication to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing problems and a growing global demand.

Our service offers private ADHD adjustment instead of waiting for NHS funding via Right to Choose. Our assessment fees cover the cost of one prescription.

Titration

A thorough evaluation of your ADHD symptoms will be conducted by an experienced consultant Psychiatrist. This includes a thorough medical history, as well as an evaluation using the standard ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.

After your evaluation You will be advised whether medication is appropriate for your situation. This will be discussed at your follow-up appointment (which can be scheduled in person, via video link or by phone). Your clinician will explain the various options for medication and, if you decide to begin taking medication, we will recommend titrating the dose to maximize the balance of benefits and side effects for you.

This is a process which could take a few weeks, and requires adjusting your child's dosage gradually until the appropriate balance is reached. It is not uncommon to to titrate as high as three different medications before you can find the one that best suits your child's ADHD. It's important for parents to participate in this titration process and keep a close eye on their child's behavior so that they can let the doctor know if the medicine is helping or causing adverse effects.

If you decide to return to NHS treatment, you will receive an individual prescription for your medication. You will have to pay for your prescription at the pharmacy. This is not included in the consultation cost. You must attend every six months to check your medication. This includes blood pressure and pulse readings. Annual reviews are also required.

Follow-up appointments

After the assessment is completed you will be able to make follow-up appointments with the psychiatrist as appropriate. Typically, the appointment will take place via a zoom video call, although in certain cases it might be possible to do an audio only consultation (again at an additional cost).

We will then discuss treatment options and decide on a bespoke, individualised ADHD medication titration. This will include a review of your medication dosage as well as an examination of any negative side effects you may be experiencing. These titration sessions cost PS150 for face-to-face sessions, and PS60 by video or phone consultation. The cost of medication is additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.

The psychiatrist will also ask you about your family history and the impact that your ADHD symptoms can have on your life, including any relationship issues you might be having or other mental health issues you might be experiencing. This is due to the fact that ADHD can be a genetic disorder and it is important that we assess any family history that may indicate whether you are at risk of developing the disorder.

It is essential that you are honest and open to the doctor during this evaluation, as the information they get will be used to determine if your ADHD meets the diagnostic criteria. This is an important step, as a wrong diagnosis could result in a prescription for medication that what is titration in adhd not appropriate.

Check if your GP accepts a Shared Care Agreement, which means that you will be referred to them when you leave the clinic for prescriptions for medication.

Medication

For many who wish to obtain an official diagnosis of ADHD medication is a crucial element of their treatment. It isn't easy to obtain a prescription from a psychiatrist on the NHS. NHS waiting lists are notoriously long and GPs can be reluctant to refer patients to specialist services.

Asking your GP to refer you to Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry - UK and ADHD 360). This means that you can choose one that provides a private assessment and titration. This can help you save time and be more convenient, especially if you have a busy work schedule.

If you are referred through this route your chosen doctor will examine you and decide whether or not you're required to be titrated on medication. You'll have to complete forms that vary by doctor however the most commonly used ones are self-reporting forms and medical histories that go to childhood and adulthood. These forms will assist your doctor identify any factors that might suggest you should not take ADHD medication if prescribed.

If you are being titrated, the medication will consist of stimulants and nonstimulant medicines. The combination will be carefully tested and monitored to determine the most suitable combination for you, taking into consideration any existing conditions you have. The titration process can be long and may require multiple appointments before the dose becomes stable.

The frequency of your follow-up appointments is contingent on the type and quantity of medication that you are taking. They could be scheduled monthly or quarterly.
