What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep kits are a great means of repairing your gear until you can get to the trailhead for a professional repair. The trick is to know what to do when you need it.

Dentures that are repaired at home over a long time can cause osteoporosis, irritation and tumors.

Tools

Having the right tools available is essential when working on the job. This kit was developed with this in mind and includes all the hand tools required to repair items in the field. All of the tools are made from steel with the least amount of plastic so that they will stand up to use. The kit comes with an afghan-like pouch with zippered for coalcracker tools, a twist awl, reamer and cutting shears and gimlets (5MM). It also includes a bottle of coalcracker oil with illustrated instructions along with a wooden spool an reamer, and a twist an awl.

Repair Patches

If you've got a gap or two in your gear, you might want to consider adding adhesive patches to your rep kit. These patches are made of high-performance adhesives that are applied to a durable polyurethane backing that lets a tear heal under pressure. The patches are available in color or clear versions. They are durable against punctures, as well as sunlight, water, saltwater and temperature extremes.

If your kit doesn't include any of the above items, consider adding a bag of waterproof Aquaseal wader repair sealant. This glue that is water-tight will adhere to plastics, fabrics, metals, and more for an unbreakable fix. It's great for repairing drysuits and may be applied in the field. Allow the sealant to cure for up to 12 hours prior to applying the repaired gear.

The essential field fabric kit for tents, packs, and rainwear made of silicone-impregnated polyester. The avon starter kit comes with one Clean Tape repair patch as well as an swatch of sil-nylon. Also included is a 1/4 ounce of Gore-Tex Repair and Sealant Adhesive Sealant tube and brush. Apply patch to a clean, smooth surface. Allow a minimum 1/2 inch overlap. Remove release paper and rub the adhesive side down using a moderate amount of pressure.

Surface preparation is essential for successful repairs; oils on boots or shoes sunblock, solvents such as Acetone could affect adhesion. To get the best results, use Seam Grip alone or with Cotol-240 Cure Accelerator to speed curing time up to two hours.

Adhesive patches

These adhesive patches are perfect for those who don't wish to wait until they get back on the trail. Apply the self-adhesive patch and apply it to the saddle.

Use the tube-scuffer for roughening the surface. This will help the glue stick. Spread a thin layer on the patch. Cover the area with a layer that is at a minimum large as the patch. Wait for the glue to become tacky then press the patch in firmly and hold it in place.

This kit includes two clear, adhesive-backed Tenacious Tape pressure sensitive fabric patch for repair and a 1/4 ounce tube of Seam Grip urethane repair adhesive & sealant. Ideal for strengthening damaged tents, sleeping bags, rainwear, packs and boots.
