WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give you boosts in specific statistics. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item level upgrade by 3. Each upgrade also increases the random substatus.

The more modernized gear generally has a higher trade value regardless of whether it has low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or a very high stat variance (like eth titan weapons). Upgrades are not as important for those with higher variance due to the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can be applied to Enchantments.

The upgrader is located in every major city, and can be accessed anytime to upgrade your equipment. To keep your gear up-to-date it is recommended that you visit the upgrader each couple of weeks.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the item upgrade level, however, they are always less expensive than purchasing new gear. For instance upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points, while buying a similar item from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items which can be used to upgrade weapons and tools, armor and other items. They can be purchased by players from NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for various currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade is purchased it can be used on any weapon, tool, or armor using a button, which will display an image of the item at its next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the item slot and the current level of the item, with weapons costing more than bracers or gloves, for instance. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of Flightstones or crests used. Once an item is upgraded to a certain level and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of the two currency types.

Upgraders for items can be found at many locations, including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade item discount as well as a chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at the beginning unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs who are able to facilitate upgrades are only accessible through a variety means. This is both a positive and a disadvantage.

In Season 3, the upgrade system has been tweaked a bit, with some new features added. After an upgrade has been completed to a specific level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same item level will cost less. This is even if the items are from another set of equipment.

The discount is applicable to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is reduced as well, but is only available once certain milestones have been reached.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW, players have a few choices. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more specialized, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in four ranks.

First, you should know that the crests can only be purchased for equipment of a certain rank. Each rank comes with distinct upgrade paths. The simplest and easiest upgrade is 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, depending on the kind of equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by finishing content at the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and engaging in outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, dungeons or raids of all difficulties for higher-tier items or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons for endgame gear. The crests can later be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade paths and steps.

Utilizing these new currencies isn't that difficult, but the system does introduce some modifications to the upgrade process. When a piece of equipment has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it is no longer required to purchase Flightstones. This change lets players upgrade item their equipment to the highest possible ilvl on all of their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

Another notable change is that crests only have one purpose, so it's important to use them wisely. It's Best item upgrade to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the top-quality equipment you can locate and save Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is especially true for items such as rings and trinkets that occupy several slots. The account-wide discount will only be applicable if all the slots on the character are filled with high-quality equipment.
