How to Replace an audi a1 key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are different connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know both the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire while in the gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially if they're an Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi tt key fob since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine is turning.
