Evolution Korea

Up until recently, the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer an alternative.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. It explains how individuals who have advantages are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less advantageous traits. Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process through which living things develop characteristics to increase their chances of living or conceiving offspring. Over time, this genetic variability can result in the development of entirely new physical or biological traits in the same population. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the majority of evolutionary changes. However other changes that are not genetic, such as the increase in the muscle mass as a result of exercise or diet cannot be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not inherited by future generations.

Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution isn't possible because it would require an extraordinary event, and that the founders of modern science rejected miracles out of fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists believe in both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their view "theistic evolution." It is sometimes known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." In this view, God creates the original species and then allows them to change over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species similar to the original.

Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in one event, referred to as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all species were created at the same time and then gradually evolved. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, creationists oppose teaching evolution at schools. This is a position that is backed by numerous professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions, however, are more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be included in their curricula.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their textbooks. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. STR has secured its first victory in eliminating examples of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. It is now focusing on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution as well.

STR claims to have the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its mission is to cut out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that a majority of them didn't believe in evolution. The root causes are unclear, but may include religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the country.

The KACR has achieved many things in the past through lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a cosmological perspective. This led to an interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.

On August 7 and 8 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
