World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading

The upgrade option allows players to boost an item's gear rating up to 700 points and add a bonus. Items can be upgraded if they're in your inventory and you bring them to the Kiln.

Certain items can be upgraded to benefit from their unique stats (like a perfectly made breakpoint armour that can be rolled to use in melee PvP) and others, like weapons, do not change significantly after an upgrade and thus aren't worth upgrading.

Weapons

Upgrades to weapons can improve their numerical stats, including attack damage, crit probability and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons also come with a flat bonus which increases their damage per second. Some weapons also have a fixed bonus which is activated when three or more identical weapons are placed in a single unit. In certain instances, this bonus could amount to more than the amount of damage that a weapon is able to upgrade by itself.

The cost of upgrading a weapon depends on its rarity as well as its current level. For example, an +2 weapon will require two standard Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade the gun will increase until it needs more Smithing Stones. At that point, it will reset back to one.

Upgrades to weapons also alter the stats of the base. This is usually a good factor, but it could also have negative consequences. In the case of items that are only used in a specific build (Whistant's shield for FB Sorcs, for example), upgrading them may render them useless unless you get a lucky roll.

The upgrade template for a weapon displays the new stats that it will get when upgraded in addition to their respective values. This means that the weapon will gain 3% attack damage if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. However the 3% does not mean that it will strike for 3 times less often, since it is an absolute statistic.

A weapon can also be rerolled using the green button, which is accompanied by circular arrows within the menu for items. The item will be rerolled and change its statistics, but not reset the weapon's level or connect it to an account's status.

Armor

A few upgrades to your armor can make the world of difference to your survivability. Certain sets can offer MASSIVE boosts to poison or curse, fire, and magic resistance, which can make traversing tough areas a breeze. In general, the greater defense your character has, the more value you get from every point of health you have, so it's important to upgrade your armor as much as you can.

To upgrade your armor, go to any of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. Upgrading a trinket is an economical alternative to buying new ones. You can upgrade their trinket for as little 12 tokens. The new trinket will feature the same base ilvl as the old one, and will include an additional 1% upgrade bonus.

Trinkets can be upgraded once the old ones are not needed and allows players to increase their power and worth over time. They can be traded between players which makes them a good alternative to gold.

Players should upgrade their most essential items first. This means that the top-in slot items for each class are first upgraded, followed by their secondary gear, and then other equipment that they will not replace in the near future (such as rings or cloaks). When choosing the items to upgrade, players should also consider the class's preferred stats. If Haste and Crit are two of the most important stats for tank players then they should consider upgrading their chest, helm and shoulders.

Trinkets are able to be upgraded to a higher ilvl after they are no longer useful, and the new trinket will receive an additional 1% upgrade bonus. A re-upgrade, however, can cause damage to the trinket unless it can be salvaged with the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or a higher tier salvage tool. Upgrades to trinkets can be more expensive than other upgrades but still cheaper than buying a new one.
