Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the traditional sextet style, and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort with a harder edge. The more edgy sound of the album was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex and less akin to previous recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live show that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The studio album came out shortly after, and the group went on a world-wide tour to promote it. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a double album called Then and Now. It was the band's first album without a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
