How to Replace an audi key fob not working G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The audi car key replacement cost will start when the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, as i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially when they're a Bosch unit like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems within your vehicle. The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then processes this signal to control fuel, timig, and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. There should be a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas.
